Fathers Day - Facts, Quotes and History.

Father's Day - The day of commemoration and celebration of Dad. It is a day to not only honor your father, but all men who have acted as a father figure in your life - whether as Stepfathers, Uncles, Grandfathers, or "Big Brothers."

Fathers Day Quotes.

"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years." - Mark Twain.

"My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard. Mother would come out and say, "You're tearing up the grass." "We're not raising grass," Dad would reply. "We're raising boys." - Harmon Killebrew.

History of Fathers Day.

Sonora , married to John B. Dodd, of Spokane Washington, first held Father's Day on June 19th 1910, her Fathers Birthday.

Mrs. Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909, she wanted a special day to honour her father, William Smart, letting him know how special he was to her.

William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife ( Sonora ’s mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in an eastern Washington State.

It wasn’t until Sonora Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children after there mother had died. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man.

At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were also beginning to celebrate "Father's Day."

In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day.

In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City.

In 1956 Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress.

In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.

Fascinating Facts.

A father ocean catfish is a true example of a devoted father.
He carries the eggs of his young is his mouth until they are ready to be born, which may take up to several weeks. During that time, he cannot eat a thing!

Penguins are another good example; Father penguins keep on their feet in arctic temperatures for sixty days or more to protect his eggs. He hides them on top of his feet, hiding them with feathered flap. Like the catfish, he cannot eat for the duration of his guard of the eggs.

Half of the Father’s Day greeting cards go to dads of all ages and nearly 20 percent are given to husbands, but the celebration of gratitude and love doesn't stop there. Many people also remember their grandfathers, sons, brothers, uncles, and men who are not related but have earned the right to be called 'someone special'.
